Weekend Adventures {6/14} — a Modern Mrs.
This past Saturday the local library held a free event for kids that they call "Kaleidoscope Celebration," which they described as "a celebration of all that we make and enjoy in life." I'm not sure how many years the library has been doing this, but I know it happened last year, and this was the first year we attended. I saw the advertisement the last time L and I went to return books, and I thought it would be a great opportunity to spend quality time together.

It began at 10am Saturday, but we didn't roll up till 11am. I figured we would beat the initial rush. The weather couldn't have been nicer! It was sunny, but there wasn't any humidity, which was great because some of the activities were held outside {as were the free hot dogs, snow cones, and lemonade they were providing}. Of the tables outside, there was one that a local pottery studio had set up where the kids could paint a ceramic tile, and there was one that had a horseshoe crab shell on it, but I couldn't tell you what they were offering because L was too concerned with painting her tile. She loves that pottery studio, so the opportunity to paint for free couldn't be passed up.

After tile painting, we moved inside to see what was being offered there, and we were directed towards a large room full of tables. We made our way around in a circle beginning with a table about bugs. I'm going to level with you.... we visited that table purely for my own enjoyment. L couldn't have cared less, but she was a good sport about it.

I was fascinated with the size of these bugs! The closest I could get L to the table, and the most involvement I could get out of her was when she picked up the turtle {shown above}. Believe it or not, that turtle is dead, and she picked it up solely to test me on whether I was telling her the truth. She couldn't wait to get out of there after that, so we mosied over to the Make Your Own Tortilla table, but halfway through the line L got bored and decided to go try Water Marbling.

The yellow paper there is L's handiwork. I think it turned out beautifully! It was soaking wet two hours later when we went to leave, and it blew up onto my shirt several times from there to my car, but it was worth it. The smaller kids got to the same activity, but with shaving cream, which I thought was neat. If they're still doing this event in two years, I'm totally taking E to give it a try!

After that L caught wind there was a Lego table, but to get through it we were directed through the kid's section of the library, and L decided to take advantage and find some new books to read. L is quite the bookworm, if you weren't already aware, and I'm always happy to oblige her in that regard.

Who remembers these from when they were kids?! I was shocked to see they had so many, since I know they aren't "cool" anymore. I was a huge fan of R.L. Stine as a kid, and moved onto his "Fear Street" series as a teenager. I honestly haven't found an author I love more than R.L. Stine. I can't get L to try them, though... She said she looked through one at school once and it got her heart racing, and she's decided to swear them off. /cries.

She found a new Wimpy Kid book and was, obviously, very happy. Aside from the new one she just found, she has read every Wimpy Kid book our library has to offer. I don't know what's so interesting about them, but hey, who am I to judge?

So, we've painted, bug-watched, water marbled, and found new books to read. It was seriously time to find those Legos! And oh the Legos we did find.... The library had six tables {at least} set up with various Lego pieces strewn all around. I decided to pull up a chair because we were going to be there a while....

After that, we went outside to get L a hot dog and snow cone, but sadly, they were sold out of hot dogs. I wasn't that beat up about it, so we just got a snow cone and lemonade instead. After that we grabbed that messy water marble painting and headed to Lowe's where I had buy a replacement soap dispenser for our sink. Sorry, I didn't think you'd care to see photos of that.

And that concludes our mommy-daughter day! We really had the best time, and I'm so looking forward to her last of school this week so we can do more together. L and I are actually planning on sitting down Wednesday afternoon to create a "Summer Bucket List," which we fully intend on sharing with you!

What about you? Did you do anything fun this weekend? Are your kids out of school yet? Do you have any summer plans?
