What's the Deal with Cartwheel by #Target?

What's the Deal with Cartwheel by Target? — A Modern Mrs.
It has been a while since I posted any savings-related goodness, and since I've recently begun using Target's new Cartwheel app, I figured it would be the perfect topic to share with you today. I admit, up until a couple of weeks ago, I had no idea what this app was or what it could do for me. After seeing a few offers Facebook friends had shared on their wall, I figured it was time to check it out. I mean, I'm there every week, and I'm always looking for ways to save money, so why not, right?

What is Cartwheel by Target?

Per Target:
Save on the things you already buy at Target with Cartwheel! Choose from hundreds of offers with discounts of 5-50% off every area of the store. Just add an offer to your Cartwheel list, scan your barcode in store, and save. It's that easy. It's like carrying around hundreds of coupons in your pocket, all neatly organized and accessible!
Cartwheel by Target is a free app for your mobile phone that enables you to find coupons for the items you're planning on purchasing. It's a simple 1-2-3-step process to find offers and use them. {See below.} These offers can be combined with manufacturer/store coupons and the discounts available via Target's REDcard, so there's a potential to score some really great deals!

How Does Cartwheel by Target Work?

I took a few screenshots of the app to help me more easily explain how to navigate the app. I do want to mention you do not need a Facebook account to utilize the app, nor do you need to sync your account to the app. I opted out of syncing, and instead use my Target email and password to login. I try to keep using Facebook as a login to a minimum, so I was happy to see there was another option.

Above you'll see the main screen, the main menu bar, and the menu for the "Offers." You simply scroll through to find the products/items you know you'll be purchasing {or just to see what's on sale}, and select the "Add" button to save the product/item to your "My Cartwheel." Once you're at the store and ready to checkout, you pull up the "My Barcode" screen, which will have one barcode the cashier will scan. This one barcode will provide the information for the register to deduct all of your discounts, or coupons, rather than needing several different barcodes for your items. Talk about speedy and convenient!

Note: You can also visit the Cartwheel website to find and save offers, as well as print your personal barcode. This barcode never changes, so you don't need to print it every time you want to shop. Just add your items, and click the "redeem in store" button in the upper right-hand corner of the page.

Also note: There is a daily limit of six barcode scans. What does this mean? It means you can save on all of the items on your Cartwheel list up to six times per day (six scans) until the offers expire. I have seen it mentioned elsewhere that there is a four item limit per transaction, but the Cartwheel by Target website does not mention this. They specifically state you can save on all 10 items in your cart up to six times per day. So, what I'm assuming they mean by a four item limit is four of the same item per offer, but you can use 10 offers per transaction.

How Are My Savings Calculated?

The best way I can explain this is to use an example. Let's say you want to buy two items that retail for $6.00 each. You have two manufacturer coupons for $2.00 each, a Target store coupon for 2/$2.00, and a Cartwheel offer for 30% off. The Cartwheel app will deduct $3.00 at the end of your transaction, and your final price will be $3.00 for the two items. The math is as follows: $12 retail - $4 manufacturer coupons - $2 Target store coupon - $3 Cartwheel discount = $3. The app will keep track of your total savings on the "My Cartwheel" screen.

What's Up with the Badges?

Badges can be earned for accomplishments such as your first discount, getting friends to sign up, etc. Unlocking badges will open up more slots to add offers, as a new user starts with just 10 available slots.

Cartwheel by Target offers are only valid in U.S. Target stores. At the time of this post, offers are not available for redemption on Target.com or Target Canada.

So, there it is! I hope this post was helpful to those of you who haven't heard of, or aren't sure about the Cartwheel by Target app. Remember, Cartwheel by Target can be downloaded via Apple's App Store, or Google Play for you Android users, and it's free!

  1. Interesting! Target is within walking distance of the house and is not nearly as seedy as our local Walmart store! My only drawback has been lack of savings so this might offset that.

  2. The great thing is that you don't always have to check before you leave to house because there's a nifty scan feature. If I make a quick stop in, I simply scan each item before I put it in the cart to see if there's an active deal. If so, add. It not, oh well; I have to get it anyway.
