Our Family Rules

Our Family Rules — A Modern Mrs.
Every family has their own set of rules; whether they're displayed or generally known is a matter of preference. We have rules, and then we have "rules," like the one displayed above. I thought this sign was adorable when I first bought it, but it was when I saw Becky of From Mrs. to Mama's post, "What We Don't Say to Our Kids," that I was struck with some inspiration, and decided to talk a bit about our family's rules.

Like any family, we have the basics, such as no hitting, taking things without asking permission, etc., but the ones I'd really like to talk about are the ones from that sign. The reason I bought that sign is because everything listed there are how we try to live each and every day, and are things J and I have tried to instill in our daughter, L. In fact, when I first saw the sign, I thought to myself, "These are rules every family should abide by." They are as follows:
  • Help each other.
  • Always tell the truth.
  • Share.
  • Do your best.
  • Pay with hugs and kisses.
  • Listen to your parents.
  • Laugh at yourself.
  • Say I love you.
  • Try new things.
  • Be thankful.
  • Show compassion.
  • Be happy.
  • Love each other.
  • Dream big.
  • Respect one another.
  • Laugh out loud.
  • Keep your promises.
  • Say please and thank you.
  • Be grateful.
  • Think of others before yourself.
  • Use kind words.
  • Know you are loved.
  • Hug often.
I mean, really, wouldn't the world be such a nicer place if everyone tried their hardest to live this way? Sure, we all mess up sometimes, but generally we follow these rules daily. These are the rules I feel are most important. These are the rules I feel will attribute to L being a well-rounded, respectful lady.

This sign is hung in our family room where we can see it every day. It's a constant reminder to do our best by following our family "rules." There are many variations of these rules, and you've probably seen one or two in various home stores, but if you were interested in purchasing the same one we have, I tracked it down via Amazon, and they have it for $29.99. I used 3M's Picture Hanging Strips to hang it, which has held up beautifully over the past year or so that we've had the sign.

I'd love to hear what some of your family's rules are! Leave 'em below? {Maybe we can learn something from each other, and possibly introduce some new, helpful rules to our households!}
