Modern Mom Style: 5 Pinterest Outfits I Wish Were Mine

1/16/2013

Insert long, drawn out sigh. We're on day four of dark, cut-through-you-cold, rainy weather... and we still have at least another day to go. Needless to say, the lighting has hardly been photo-friendly, and I haven't been wearing anything terribly cute because I just want to stay warm, and not ruin any of my shoes. To make matters worse, these last few mornings I've found myself staring at my wardrobe with zero inspiration or excitement. I'm bored. Clothes, I'm bored with you.

I'm no big-time fashion blogger. I don't have a large wardrobe. This is why I like layering pieces — I can take one or two pieces and make several outfits from them, but I just can't seem to come up with anything new lately, and the repeats are starting to bug me.

So, I'll go to my Style Inspiration Pinterest board, and get further annoyed over my lack of options. Why annoyed? Because these are key pieces! Key pieces, y u not in my wardrobe?!

Why can't I have 20 scarves in different colors, textures, prints and patterns? Why can't I have half a dozen cardigans in various cuts and colors? These are the things I find myself lemming for the most.... in addition to that Michael Kors Tortoise Watch I'll never own, of course.

If we ever aren't broke, I plan to break out my Real Simple Wardrobe Basics Checklist and finish checking off a few things, but... until then... I'll just keep pinning away all the exciting pieces I may never own.

Queue sad music.

Anyway, since I don't have any of my own outfits to share today, I thought I'd share five outfits from my board that are perking me up on this gloomy, non-wintery day.

Bright pink and teal? What else is there to say? I love the peplum sweater and collared shirt layered beneath. The printed pants are just so cute!  I love how stylish, yet wearable these outfits are — anyone could pull them off!

Honestly, how cozy does that sweater look? I love how she layered a striped top underneath to add some character to the outfit. And that necklace? Get in my closet! I haven't worn a necklace since getting my pixie, but I need that one.

Okay, so fall is my favorite season, and the left outfit screams fall, but that's not going to stop me from wearing it in the winter. The scarf is to-die-for, and the olive pants? Yes, please. Earthy neutrals is my game. On the right, that's an Old Navy sweater with a vibrant orange-y coral scarf. You can't tell in this shot, but those are basic skinnies on the bottom (and probably some flats). Yep, that simple, yet gorgeous.

What's been inspiring you lately?

  1. BUY ALL THE SCARVES! I think that's going to be on my tombstone when I die. And they can bury me with ALL THE SCARVES! At least I'll be cozy in the afterlife.

    But seriously.

I'm kind of in love with that grey sweater in the third outfit. And the necklace is kind of interesting - I've never worn a long necklace like that before (because with my luck I'll get caught on something) but it's a style I've considered trying.

And thanks for the link to the wardrobe basics list!

  2. For real. I saw a mustard fringe scarf at Rite Aid last week that I almost bought to send with your polish. I was like, "Christine would love this!" I didn't buy it, though, because it felt a little too cheap... thin, like it would snag/unravel/not last long.

You're very welcome! I printed that list off over a year ago and have it on my desk to slowly check things off as I find them.

  3. Awwww! You're too sweet, seriously (and thanks for the millionth time for that polish. It's going on tonight to cheer me up from this dreary gray and snowy weather).

I'm of the mindset that when I find an item of clothing that I love, I tend to try and get it in multiple colors so I can wear the same comfortable thing without looking like I'm wearing the same thing (if that makes sense). I definitely do that a lot more when there are great sales going on (which is why I have the same skirt in... 7 colors...).

  4. I have a cardi I got from Target in three colors, which is good, but I'd like some other styles. Maybe some asymmetrical, boyfriend, etc. We just never have any disposable income with commuting costs, health care, and now this social security business. /sigh. Being a grown-up sucks.

  5. Oh seriously. It makes buying all the things much more difficult. But I've been trying to update my wardrobe for work (even though I can come in wearing jeans and a t-shirt and be fine, I'm trying to dress a bit nicer than that - dress for the job you want, not the job you have!)

Being an adult with all these responsibilities is totally lame. I'm thankful to be able to buy my train tickets with pre-tax money (it comes right out of my check), so I don't even have a chance to "accidentally" spend that money. As for social security, I pretty much don't believe that it's going to be around by the time I retire, so I have to save accordingly. :-P Do not like.

  6. Right! It probably won't be around, but that doesn't stop them from taxing the crap out of me.

  7. Me and you basically have the same style! I was looking at the pictures saying "ok give me that right now" I love fall as well, hello skinny jeans and boots!!! This year I want to build a better wardrobe slowly, I'm bored with my stuff as well.

  8. Of course we do! We're the same person. /wink. Ugh... If only I had spent my money on clothes instead of makeup over the last two years. What a terrible investment!

  9. Right!? Because you can just switch up the clothes to look like you have more.
